So for the last few days I have done some intense reflection in my mind over what I have experienced the past few years. I have often been off in a daze at work, not focusing on what I should be doing and instead thinking of what I have not done to promote my brand. I take pride in the moniker “The Sports Nerd”, as it was a name that I gave myself and for the most part, it has stuck within my circle of friends and colleagues on the web. I don’t foresee any reason why I should ever drop that from my online persona, so to honor that name and to continue my love of sports, I have decided to NOT delete the website www.thesportsnerd.us and keep it going as best I can. Most of you know that I post rarely, and the blog has been in disarray for a while. Months go by without me making a post, and when I do it usually doesn’t garner a lot of attention anyway, but because there are times that I need to blog and put my thoughts down, I am going to keep it going. With that being said, don’t expect me to all of a sudden make daily blog posts because those of you that know my track record, that wont happen. What I am saying is that I have grown attached to my little corner of the web and will keep it up, if for nothing else than for my own vanity. I feel that if I were to close it down I would no longer be “The Sports Nerd” and just go back to being Scott, and I know that sounds stupid, but that’s how my mind thinks. So this blog is staying and I will be posting. How often I’m not sure, but I will post from time to time, and as you all know, when I do post, I usually have a LOT to say.
And as if on cue… I have some thoughts….
First.. The Browns are still a train wreck and Kizer is not the answer. I don’t know what the answer is, but Kizer looks like a deer caught in the headlights every time he drops back to pass. He isn’t progressing, and hell, “Mitchell Fucking Trubisky” looked better in his first start last night against a stout Vikings defense than Kizer has looked all year. In the last two drafts, the Browns have passed up on Carson Wentz, Dak Prescott, Deshaun Watson, AND Mitchell Fucking Trubisky… That says a WHOLE lot right there. Who the hell is scouting for this team? Helen Keller? Hey Hue.. how bout you get your head out of your ASS and find a QB…
Next… Devastating injuries throughout the league after 5 weeks. Beckham, Greg Olson, JJ Watt, Derek Carr, Marcus Mariota, Dalvin Cook, Darren Sproles, CJ Fedorowicz, Danny Woodhead, Allen Robinson, Kevin White, Brandon Marshall, Sterling Shepard, and that’s just the ones I can remember. What the hell is going on in the NFL where we have so many injuries? I don’t know, but my fantasy team has taken a huge hit already and we are only 5 weeks in. Don’t get me wrong.. Fantasy Football is a hobby, and I don’t get depressed or very pissed off over a depleted fantasy roster, because well… it’s FANTASY… and these guys getting hurt is real and I have a sense of perspective, but I just can’t help but feel like there is something in the NFL Gatorade recipe that’s making these guys more susceptible to injury this year…
After week 5… here are your division leaders… Jacksonville… Buffalo(tie)… NY Jets(tie)… LA Rams(tie).. wait… WHAT?
We now bring you to the feather ruffling portion of this blog post…
Recent events have caused Politics to enter the world of the NFL. Colin Kaepernick’s actions from last season has bled into this season with the “stand or kneel during the national anthem” debate. It seems that everyone I know has an opinion on this issue and frankly I don’t care what your opinion is, I respect whatever your stance is, but for the record, I could care less if you stand, kneel, sit, or lay down and take a nap during the national anthem. The anthem is nothing more than a song to represent the USA, it isn’t sacrosanct and it isn’t a holy song, anymore than “God Bless America” or “My Country Tis of Thee”. Its a patriotic song, it is our national anthem, but what most don’t know is that It is one of the most racist, pro-slavery, anti-black songs in the American lexicon… cited here: Star Spangled Bigotry . There are more verses than what you hear on Sundays prior to your favorite NFL team taking the field. Francis Scott Key was a pro-slavery aristocrat and city prosecutor, so to think that the anthem represents “everything” that is good about the USA is misguided at best. Look, I am a middle-aged white male, and although I was born in the north (Ohio), I was raised in the south since the age of 12. I love Lynard Skynard, country music, NASCAR, and sweet tea, but I ALSO voted for Obama twice and also Hillary last November, so that makes me a minority in my “class” (and to some of my friends it also makes me an idiot) so let me just say that I have NO PROBLEM with rich, elite athletes taking a knee or sitting during the national anthem. I have bloodlines dating back to the Mayflower (I can cite proof if need be), my ancestors fought in the Revolutionary War, Civil War(north), WWII, Korea, and Vietnam, and if you want to get to the bare bones fact of the issue, they ALL fought not only for the freedom to STAND for the anthem, they also fought for the right to kneel or sit for it as well. It’s called freedom of speech, freedom to protest, and freedom to bring attention to an issue that anyone feels strongly about. With that being said, I also respect and understand if you are offended by what these players are doing, because it also your right as a citizen of this country to be offended by their actions. It doesn’t make them wrong, it doesn’t make you right, its called freedom of expression, another right guaranteed by the constitution of this country. If you want to express your feelings and say that the players are showing disrespect to the flag and our military, than so be it, you have that right, and I won’t criticize you for it. However to be honest, and if you were actually paying attention, this protest was NEVER about the military or the flag, it was about the injustice that has been plaguing minorities in this country since its inception. You can choose to believe it, understand it, accept it, reject it, or call it a load of horseshit, that’s your right, but I ask, no plead for you to actually LISTEN to why these guys are doing what they are doing. Take your patriotic blinders off and understand what they are attempting to bring to the forefront of this situation. I will respect your right to be pissed off, I will honor your right to speak out against them, but as long as I respect your right to be pissed, you also have to respect these players message. They may be rich professional athletes, but you also have to agree that they have a stage in which the plight and struggles of those with no voice can not and do not have the access or ability to bring their grievances to the forefront of the country and those that have the power to make changes.
With all of that being said… I do have some criticisms of the players and owners of the NFL.. First, in week 3, you all decided to have a “kumbaya moment” and link arms in a show of unity across the entire league. This “SHOW OF UNITY” only came as a response to the President of the United States “putting himself in the discussion” by announcing at a rally in Alabama that owners should fire any player that decides to sit or kneel during the anthem. Instead of addressing the underlying issue, you became pawns in Trumps “reality show” drama, and in my opinion only made it worse. Now we have owners laying down the law and the commissioner of the NFL drawing a proverbial line in the sand practically ordering and mandating that all employees of the NFL must stand during the national anthem to give the flag is due respect. This has become a circus, and the only clowns in this drama are the players, the owners and the front office of the NFL. Trump is laughing at you, because he forced you to play his game. Mike Pence left the Indy vs San Francisco game early on Sunday, stating that the actions of the players caused him to leave, when he knew DAMN WELL they were going to do it. He only left the game to satisfy his boss’ desire to create more drama, not to make a point. Oh and don’t get me started on the media… they love this shit… they love to sensationalize all of it, anything to drum up ratings and create talking points for a story. They are as guilty as anyone. I quit watching the news a long time ago and for good reason… you cant believe any of it.. you have to be intelligent and see through the sensationalism, the lies, the exaggerations, and the pure bull shit that is the mainstream media.
I appreciate you reading my thoughts.. I had a lot to say, and if I pissed some of you off, sorry about that, as it was not my intention, but this is what I’m thinking and felt since I had the venue… What the hell… put it out there. Despite all the drama, I will be in front of my TV Sunday, rooting for the Browns and the Bucs to win. When it comes to football, politics are not even involved, and I will root them on no matter what happens off the field.
But wait… there’s more…
Game 5.. ALDS… Indians/Yankees… Kluber vs Sabathia… Progressive Field… Yankee fans have been up in arms about this series since game 2, when the “hit by pitch” issue came up. should Girardi have challenged the call, shouldn’t he, was he right to let them keep playing? the answer is… who cares, it’s postseason Baseball and the longer it goes on the better it is for the game. I say, let all series go their maximum games… we all need deciding game 5’s or game 7’s in our lives. This is why we love the game… the drama, the excitement, the tension, the “on the edge of your seat stress” of the postseason. I love it, and win or lose tomorrow… I am proud of the Tribe for what they accomplished, and am hopeful for the future of the franchise. Terry Francona has proved he is a genius, and I am happy he is the manager of this team. GO TRIBE!!!
OH!! the NHL season has started???? what a great time of the year….
Thank you for reading. Be well, and be nice to each other….
