So I am reminded from time to time that my blogging is erratic at best, and that there is no rhyme or reason to when I blog, when I have content and so I decided to try and come up with a game plan to change all of that. I will post two articles a week, on on Monday, and one on Thursday. Monday’s post will be mostly about the week in sports that was, and Thursday’s post will be revealed on Thursday. I am going to give you a hint and say that I will be stealing a theme from a good friend of mine to provide the Thursday posts. Yes I know today is Tuesday, I actually started this post on Monday, but the sleep monster overcame me and the lack of sleep I have been getting recently reared its ugly head and prevented me from finishing this and I passed out rather early.
OK so lets get this going.
The big stories in the sports world continue to be the fallout from the NFL Draft and the NHL Playoffs heating up. There are two big stories that are buzzing in the NFL world, Johnny Manziel and Michael Sam. I will spend more time on the former rather than the latter. Johnny made his all important first appearance in Berea at Browns Rookie camp. He is saying all of the right things it seems, but it is yet to be seen how he handles the role of backup, (at least for now) as opposed to starter. He is saying all the right things, he knows he has to earn the starting position and that nothing will be given to him without him earning it. I don’t know where I stand on this, since I had mixed feelings about the pick in the first place. Not convinced he is ready not convinced he is the answer nor did I believe he will live up to the hype. After hearing him over the weekend, seeing how he is approaching the role, I am feeling better about it. Time will tell, and we are just 2 months away from training camp, and I am getting more excited as we get closer to the season. the second largest story coming out of the draft is of course he Michael Sam saga. for the record, I could care less if he was gay, straight or bisexual. As an owner or coach the only thing that concerns me is his ability to play.the Rams put a stop to the fiasco that would have been the “documentary” that was to be filmed by the OWN network. Sam has said all along that he does not want to be known as the “Gay football player” and that he just wants to focus on playing. why then did this project even have the possibility of becoming a reality. We all know that the focus wont be on his playing, but on his sexuality, and all that can do is bring a circus atmosphere to the Rams, something that they do not need or want. If you want to be known as a player, not the Gay player, then attention to that fact is not what you or your employer needs.
The NHL Playoffs are heating up.. an we have our teams for the conference finals. In the east we have the NY Rangers and the Montreal Canadians. NY took game one on Saturday with a dominating 7-1 win over the home team. the Canadians lost their excellent goalie Carey Price to a right knee injury he suffered in game 1. Last night the Rangers won game 2, practically guaranteeing a trip to the Stanley Cup finals. Its too bad for the Habs, since they have done so well in the playoffs up to this point, sweeping the Lightning and knocking off the Bruins in round 2. In the West we have the “Defending Champion Chicago Blackhawks” (That’s for you Tom) and the LA Kings. Chicago took game one and game two is tonight. this will be the best series of the two, I feel it could go 7 games. LA is tough in the playoffs, and Chicago is the best team left, LA overcame a 3-1 deficit to the Sharks to win the first round in 7 games, while they played a pretty even series against the Ducks of Anaheim winning that series in 7 as well, finishing off the Ducks on their own home ice. I’m really going to enjoy this series and feel the eventual winner of the cup will come from the West.
Other sports stories in the pipeline is the race for the triple crown, with Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner California Chrome having the best shot at winning the triple crown in years. There was some mild controversy regarding the use of a breathe strip but they will allow him to wear it after all, which provides all the excitement needed leading up to the final race at Belmont in two weeks. should be fun. Baseball in its second month of action and there have been some good storylines, and although it is still too early to get hyped up for October, I love the first couple of months of baseball because no matter which city you live in there is a point that somehow, no matter how far-fetched it may seem, your team has a shot at winning the division or making the wild card to get to the playoffs. Of course there is the NBA playoffs, but personally I could care less. Not a fan of the NBA as most of you already know, and whoever wins the Title will be nothing more than a blip on my radar.
Shameless plug time..
In case some of you haven’t noticed, and by the attendance recently you haven’t I do a weekly Spreecast on Sunday nights with a couple of good friends of mine, Bop Pizor and Brian Cullen. We are “The Sports Nerds” and it is 90 mins or more of good sports talk, rants, mindless babble and just good ‘ol fun. I ask you come see us, poke your head in and say hi and sit back watch and be prepared to laugh. The best way to get there is to follow me on Twitter @BrownBuc or follow us at the link below:
Hope you all have a great week,
